Words don’t come easy

This think piece, written by Bridget McKenzie of Flow Associates, aims to unpick the meanings of key terms relating to skills and abilities. Bridget addresses the word ‘skills’ itself, as well as ‘competencies’, ‘capacities’ and ‘literacies’.

The One by One project commissioned Bridget to write this as part of the Phase 2 research. We noticed how these different terms are often used interchangeably. We were interested in better understanding their specific meanings, not only because we are keen to use them in their right context in all our project activity, but also (and arguably more importantly) to ensure that the final project outputs and recommendations for the wider museum sector are reflective of these distinctive meanings.

If you are interested in the meanings of different words, particularly related to the skills agenda, we’re sure Bridget’s piece will get you thinking.
